2017 Lady Hill Merlot
With the help of legends Dr. Clore and David Lake, the Sauers began experimenting with vinifera at Red Willow in 1973. Planted 1200+ ft above the Missoula flood plain in ancient volcanic soils, the site proved to be one of the state’s most iconic vineyards.
A cooler vintage led to a later bud break, but summer warmth set harvest back on schedule. Early rains and a September cool down stalled sugar levels, allowing flavors to develop and acidity to remain high, ideal for this early ripener.
PROFILE: Only the color is “classic” about this merlot. Hues of purple and red drift to a core of mahogany. Luscious red and black berry notes ooze between baking spices, tobacco leaf and vanilla. A touch of sweetness is disguised with an uncommon structure that tugs towards a juicy, lingering finish. Enjoy into 2030.
